Artists Scott Kelly and Bel Polkinghorne have installed a series of obstructive banners around New Zealand to get people thinking about the impact of online algorithms.
We have all seen “related items” or “if you like this you might like this” online when shopping or scrolling through Facebook, Instagram. This is what inspired the two London based artists when making there new project called “Signs of the Times.” The aim was to get people to think about there online impact.
The pair pointed out that they weren’t trying to make a big, sweeping statement about the role that the internet and its recommendations play in people’s lives, but they did want to call attention to how many of our decisions are essentially made for us. “If the online [world] is making its way more and more into the real world, what does that mean for every other decision in our lives?”
