WHAT'S THE HYPE ABOUT VEG TAN LEATHER?
Veg tan raw is leather tanned slowly with natural plant tannins (bark, wood) instead of chemical chrome tanning, left undyed and unfinished straight off that process.
It's prized because it's firm enough to hold shape (belts, wallets, boots) and, being untreated, it darkens and develops a rich patina with wear and sun exposure over time rather than just wearing out.
Compared to fast-made leather, chrome-tanned in about a day using chemical salts and usually coated with a synthetic finish, veg tan takes weeks to months to produce properly.
That slower process results in a denser, more durable hide that ages and improves rather than just breaking down, while quick-tanned leather tends to look and feel more uniform and "plasticky," and doesn't develop the same character over time.
It's leather that shows an honest history of use rather than one built for speed and cost.
