A mini check in black and white is one of those patterns that refuses to go out. At this scale it reads almost as a tone from a distance — a dark shirt with some visual interest — and reveals itself properly up close. The fact that it's yarn-dyed rather than printed matters: the colour is woven into the thread before the fabric is made, which gives the check cleaner definition and a depth that printed checks tend to flatten out.
